Hashigo-zake talked up the new release this past Tuesday. It was worth checking out among the many treats on offer this week. The beer was a collaboration between Pelican pub and brewery in Pacific City, Oregon USA and 666 brewery and they call it “Our Precious”. Certainly the long journey it made to New Zealand made it a most precious drop, though it wasn’t treasured by everyone present. Among the people of UK origin around the table (who like their sessionable beers) there was some disagreement about the characteristics and desirability of this brew. Was it too light bodied? did it really have a floral aroma or was half the table imagining it? It was an issue that went unresolved for some. Nevertheless, we had an opinionated group of ten supping this brew and haiku-ing it. It was a refreshing beer that signalled the coming seasons promise down under, and like Pelicans it made us think of little fish treats we’d like to eat.

hai·ku (hk)
n. pl. haiku also hai·kus
1. A Japanese lyric verse form having three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables, traditionally invoking an aspect of nature or the seasons.
2. A poem written in this form.
It did divide opinion didn’t it? Which seems odd for such an unobtrusive style! I said it before and am saying it again: I loved it, it’s everything a summer ale should be. Like a beautiful ray of sunshine that visits your mouth before being absorbed by the brain’s happy centre….And anyone who says otherwise should start sleeping with some sort of weapon under their pillow….
You know your stuff greasy…it was a good debate…I liked it too.(Malice)
Being a gingerbearded scotsman I am a weapon lying on a pillow, and no i didn’t like the beer much but that’s just my hummble view. My taste buds may have been distorted by the grumpy mood I was in so I will have to have another try some time.

You guys are like an old married couple…
It’s great…
A Mike Leigh film even!
steptoe and son…
I will take the Mike Leigh comparison over Steptoe and Son any day. I think Greasy Lightbulb and I aptly illustrate the unique nature of the relationship between the Scots and the English.
