BEER HAIKU #78 Hashigo Zake Staffie Series – Beetnik IPA

This week’s new release at Hashigo Zake Cult Beer Bar isn’t strictly speaking all that new. Dave the Beer Guy invented his signature fusion of borscht and IPA at least a couple of years ago. Now, in collaboration with Baylands Brewery, this unique tribute to the Cane Toads, has been reincarnated to inaugurate a programme of beers brewed by Hashigo Zake staff past and present.

Staffie Series – Beetnik IPA (6.3% ABV)

Pink froth, soda pop
Vegetarian beatnik
Leaves turn, drop from Wood

Food match: Pickled egg and chipotle salt; liver and onions; haggis chips
It’s the kind of beer you drink when: You have a urine test the next day (and need a masking agent)

Secret Santa’s Thirstyboy surprise 2013

This personalised coaster turned up under one of the Thirstyboys (karori fry up) Christmas trees a few months ago. Nice job…unidentified designer-person, nice job.

BEER HAIKU #75 #76 #77 – 8 Wired Tap Takeover

A couple of years ago, 8 Wired were the deserved winners of the Brewers’ Guild Brewery of the Year. Since then, they’ve expanded their range and produced the occasional special release, notably the heavyweight champion Imperial Stout ‘Bumaye’. This week, Hashigo Zake Cult Beer Bar offered a partial 8 Wired tap takeover.

Black Wired Black IPA (7% ABV)

Falls between two stools
Pleasing bitter novelty
Autumn came early

Brettanomyces Pilsener Wild Fermented Pils (5% ABV)

Brett for beginners
Not as sour as advertised
Needs more sun and yeast

Ice Distilled Bumaye 3 x Imperial Stout (27% ABV)

Marmite dysfunction
Evokes brutal Death Metal
Promises harsh winter

Food match for all of the above: Scandinavian blue mud trout, boiled cod and potatoes in a black bread open sandwich

These are the kinds of beer you drink: at 3.00 a.m. When you’ve got a really good cigar, a squirrel gun, you’re in your undies, and RAW POWER by Iggy and the Stooges is playing at ELEVEN!

Check out this previous haiku on Bumaye from August 2013

BEER HAIKU #74 To Ol Fuck Art – This is Architecture Belgian Ale

It’s been a while since Mikeller disciples To Ol have been featured at Hashigo Zake Cult Beer Bar. Fortunately, this week the new release tap was graced by a Brett-driven, hoppy little number. Was it the “Orval on steroids” promised by The Management? Only the haiku would tell the tale…

To Ol Fuck Art – This is Architecture Belgian Ale (5% ABV)

Frivolous farmyard
Funk – seedless juicy guava,
Bikini weather

Food match: marinated anchovies in saffron-infused olive oil; porcini arancini

It’s the kind of beer you drink when:  You’re reenacting a Labour Party caucus meeting
